Dunedin Guided Walks

Mt Cargill & The Organ Pipes

Mt Cargill is the most prominent peak in Dunedin and an excursion to the summit provides the ultimate panoramic views of the harbour, Dunedin city and the Otago Peninsula. Astounding vistas unfold both, north and south, along the coast.

Clients will be driven from their accommodation up Mt Cargill Road to the start of the walkway. We climb through secondary growth for views of the upper harbour, Mihiwaka, Mount Kettle, Blueskin Bay and the Silver Peaks. Then into Mt Cargill's native bush, containing broadleaf, tree fuschia, pepperwood, mountain cedar and emergent totara and many lush ferns.

The tour will stop to see the amazing Organ Pipes, 10 million year old columnar jointed basalt plugs formed during the volcanic eruptions that formed Otago's Harbour. Once past the Organ Pipes the growth becomes more stunted as clients ascend to the spectacular views. Wander through manuka, kanuka and dracophyllum scrub and the sculptural remnants of burnt out mountain cedar, finally emerging on to Buttars Peak, 617 m above sea level to enjoy the stunning 360 degree vista. Today, Dunedin has a rightly deserved reputation as one of the best preserved Victorian and Edwardian cities in the Southern Hemisphere. Enjoy viewing a selection of the finest of these buildings on the University Campus.

The University of Otago, New Zealand's oldest university - a handsome stone pile modeled on the University of Glasgow buildings- was founded in 1869 by an ordinance of the Otago Provincial Council.
